{"id":15495,"date":"2011-12-09T00:54:12","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T04:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/?p=15495"},"modified":"2011-12-12T14:15:30","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T18:15:30","slug":"taiwan-culinary-night-experience-the-best-of-taiwan%e2%80%99s-diverse-cuisine-in-the-heart-of-manhattan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/?p=15495","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan Culinary Night: Experience the Best of Taiwan\u2019s Diverse Cuisine in the Heart of Manhattan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) hosted a Taiwan Culinary Night tonight (12\/8) in the lobby of the TECO-NY building in order to celebrate the official launching of Government Information Office\u2019s (GIO) new website dedicated to Taiwan\u2019s diverse food culture. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070211.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15495]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15497\" title=\"taiwan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nine representative dishes were served at the event in order to give New Yorkers an opportunity to taste and experience the many facets of Taiwanese food in the heart of Manhattan. This exclusive event was attended by close to a hundred guests, including international media groups like ABC, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Japan\u2019s Sankei Shinbun and Mainichi Shinbun, as well as famous food journalists and bloggers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070242.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15495]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15498\" title=\"taiwan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaiwan has always had rich and multifarious culinary influences,\u201d points out Director of the Press Division, Brian Su. \u201cIn order to introduce the wonderful tastes and depth of Taiwan\u2019s food culture, the GIO has designed a multilingual website devoted to Taiwanese cuisine and its distinctive origins and history. The dishes at tonight\u2019s event were meant to inspire people to learn more about this important part of our culture and to use this exciting new resource.\u201d TECO-NY\u2019s Director General, Andrew Kao agreed, saying \u201cTaiwan\u2019s culinary culture is an important part of our soft power on the world stage and we hope that the international community can experience it in order to increase its understanding of Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070224.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15495]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15503\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Press Division selected nine emblematic dishes for the evening\u2019s guests: braised pork in steamed buns; steamed glutinous rice with red crab; lobster salad; sweet and sour sparerib; Hakka rice snacks and cakes; rice cooked in a bamboo stalk; sun cakes; and bubble tea. In addition to the spread, H.J. Jan, a renowned Taiwanese chef who won the gold medal in the 2008 IKA\/Culinary Olympics and won first place in last month\u2019s New York World Culinary Competition, used his unparalleled knife technique to carve intricate dragons out of fruit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070267.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15495]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15500\" title=\"taiwan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asianinny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PC070267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GIO\u2019s \u201cTaiwan Culinary Culture Website\u201d is divided into seven basic categories, which include Taiwanese street foods, Taiwanese cuisine, Taiwanese seafood, Chinese fusion, Hakka cuisine, indigenous cuisine, and traditional sweets and beverages. The website is accessible in Chinese, English, Japanese, Spanish now and will have German, French, Russian and Korean versions added later, making it possible for our culinary traditions to reach as many people internationally as possible. The website is meant to pique people\u2019s interest in Taiwan\u2019s food, heritage, and culture and encourage people to visit and try its delicious cuisine.
