Start with SUP Basics ($95): During the 90-minute, land-and-river-based course, you\u2019ll learn different positions, finishing with the signature standing Tahitian racing stroke. Afterward, test your talents with practice sessions (five for $75) while a trained instructor supervises.<\/p>\n

The New York Outrigger club\u2019s free novice program offers a half hour of training on land, followed by 30 to 45 minutes on the water, with three beginners paired with three experienced paddlers. Fill out a free preregistration form on the website, and you\u2019ll receive an e-mailed sign-up link for the class.<\/p>\n

Instructors at the Manhattan Sailing School turn amateurs into aficionados with their immersive basic sailing course. The 20 hours of tutelage (Sat, Sun 9am\u20137pm) are split between theory and practice. You and three others will perfect all the necessary skills in a J\/24 keelboat, including basic navigation, rigging and derigging, plus proper commands, so you wont be stuck yelling \u201cland ho!\u201d over and over.
