Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang is the recipient of the $200,000 Steinberg Award for Playwriting, according to the New York Times.<\/p>\n
The award, which is monetarily the largest in the American theatre, is awarded every other year. Previous recipients include Tony Kushner and Lynn Nottage.<\/p>\n
Hwang told the Times that the prize has allowed him to turn down TV and film work so that he can focus on various stage projects, explaining, “This award literally buys me time to focus mostly on my theater work. Even if you\u2019re lucky to have a play on Broadway like Chinglish, you don\u2019t necessarily earn enough off it to support the years it takes to get there.”<\/p>\n
His current projects include Signature Theatre Company’s 2013 production of his newest work, Kung Fu; rewrites on his 1998 play Golden Child; possible London and Broadway revivals of his Tony-winning M. Butterfly; and a screenplay adaptation of Chinglish, which will be directed by Justin Lin.<\/p>\n
As previously reported, Signature Theatre Company’s Residency One: David Henry Hwang Series will feature Golden Child, directed by Leigh Silverman; The Dance and the Railroad, directed by May Adrales; and the world premiere of Kung Fu, directed by Silverman. Hwang won the Best Play Tony Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for M. Butterfly in 1988. His Chinglish appeared on Broadway in 2011-12.<\/p>\n
