Chef Eddie Huang, author of the acclaimed new memoir, Fresh Off the Boat, and rapper Heems, formerly of the indie hip-hop trio Das Racist, join John Schaefer and WNYC’s Soundcheck for an afternoon of food, music and conversation about embracing cultural mashups and defying stereotypes \u2014 musical or otherwise \u2014 facing first-generation Americans.<\/p>\n

The first 75 audience members to arrive will receive a free bao (Taiwanese steam bun) from Huang’s BaoHaus restaurant in the East Village.<\/p>\n

Fresh Off the Boat, Huang’s new memoir, is a hilarious and honest reflection on a childhood spent growing up in Florida as the son of Taiwanese immigrants. Host John Schaefer will talk with the bad boy restaurateur once referred to as “the Flavor Flav of the downtown dining scene” about his book and his lifelong passion for hip-hop. The afternoon will also include a live performance from Heems (a.k.a. Himanshu Suri). His latest mixtape, Wild Water Kingdom, was released late last year.<\/p>\n
