Trilateral relationships tend to be naturally unstable, but a host of factors further complicate the dynamics between the United States, Japan and China. Beyond historical enmities, differing philosophies of governance and increasing competition and interdependence, recent issues such as President Obama\u2019s \u201cPivot to Asia,\u201d Japan\u2019s nationalization of the Senkaku Islands, and changes in leadership in both China and Japan have all contributed to an increasingly tense trilateral relationship.
