China has long adhered to a principle of ‘non-interference’ in other states’ affairs. However, as more of its companies have been investing in projects overseas, and millions of its nationals are travelling abroad, Beijing is finding itself progressively involved in other countries – through the need to protect these interests and citizens.

The shift in Chinese foreign policy towards a more interventionist approach is explored in Jonas Parello-Plesner and Mathieu Dûchatel’s new book ‘China’s Strong Arm: protecting Citizens and Assets Abroad’ (published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis). Find more coverage of the book on BBC, Bloomberg, or the East Asia Forum.

Jonas Parello-Plesner will speak for around 20 minutes to present the key themes and ideas of the book, followed by a Q&A session. Drinks and networking will precede the speaker.
