\nChancing upon the address and photograph of the mother he never met, nine-year-old Masao decides to spend his summer vacation making a trip to visit her. He is accompanied by brusque oddball Kikujiro (Takeshi Kitano, who was recently named an officer in the French Legion of Honor), who seems to have nothing better to do other than shout threats and sniff out easy money.<\/p>\n

A conscious attempt to steer away from the hardboiled yakuza films that established his international reputation, Kitano\u2019s picaresque road film displays the filmmaker\u2019s unique brand of sentimentality and his exceptional gift for deadpan comedy. Featuring a memorable score by renowned composer Joe Hisaishi.<\/p>\n

Part of Japan Society\u2019s Monthly Classics, screenings of beloved films, hidden gems, or recent discoveries of Japanese cinema on the first Friday of every month, Kikujiro is co-presented with the Japan Foundation and is screened with cooperation from Metrograph in anticipation of their 11-film series Takeshi “Beat” Kitano, running from November 16 through 22.<\/p>\n
