(1985) \u201cDon\u2019t crumple those snack wraps!\u201d In an eiga-kan (moviehouse), dapperly white-clad yakuza K\u00f4ji Yakusho forcefully points out to a hapless audience member and \u2013 speaking directly to the screen \u2013 us, that he doesn\u2019t like his screenings interrupted. That said, Shane-like truck driver Tsutomu Yamazaki (the kidnapper in Kurosawa\u2019s High and Low and the veteran mortician of Departures) and his sidekick, a very young Ken Watanabe (late of Broadway\u2019s King and I revival), are trapped by a downpour in Nobuko Miyamoto\u2019s (real-life wife of director Itami) ramen joint \u2013 but all Yamazaki winds up with is a knuckle sandwich when opinions differ on the quality of her fare. Itami\u2019s \u201cNoodle Western\u201d is an exploding pi\u00f1ata of gags on man\u2019s two eternal favorites \u2013 food and sex \u2013 as Miyamoto\u2019s Tampopo (literally, \u201cDandelion\u201d) embarks on a relentless quest in search of the perfect noodle, with plenty of room for tangents on how to cook a delicious rice omelet before the night watchman comes in; how to enhance bedroom delights with a raw egg; and how dreams of yam sausage can assuage the after effects of a bullet fusillade.
