Japanese koto and shamisen player and singer\/songwriter Sumie Kaneko has been recognized as a pioneer for blending Japanese traditional elements into jazz improvisation.<\/p>\n

She studied Japanese traditional music at Tokyo University of the Arts and Jazz vocal at Berklee College of Music. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Yo-Yo Ma\u2019s Silk Road Project, Boston Ballet, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and at TED talks among others.<\/p>\n

Kaneko accompanied bunraku puppeteer Basil Twist on shamisen for the premiere of The Long Christmas Ride Home, a one-act full-length play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 16, 2003.<\/p>\n

In 2014, her group was invited to the Washington DC Jazz Festival, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Japan. Soon after they made their sold-out debut at Blue Note NY, the most well known jazz club in the world.<\/p>\n

Joining Kaneko at Club Bonafide are Toru Dodo on piano, Evan Gregor on bass, and Kaoru Watanabe on taiko and fue.<\/p>\n
