Acting in an unprecedented collaboration, more than 30 prominent Asian art specialists, 5 auction houses and 18 museums and Asian cultural institutions in the metropolitan New York City area will join forces to present Asia Week New York 2011, which will take place from March 18-26. Participants will include 34 Asian art dealers, Bonhams, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Doyle New York and iGavel. Asia Society and Japan Society will co-host with Asia Week New York 2011 two among the dozens of special events planned for the week.
Asia Week New York 2011 will kick off on Friday, March 18, with a reception at Asia Society. Asia Society will also recognize Asia Week New York 2011 with its annual gala benefit reception and dinner on Monday, March 21. Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, will be filled with numerous exhibition open houses hosted by the participating Asian art specialists. In addition to those based in New York, dealers will travel from England, France, Italy and Japan to participate. Representing a rich and diverse range of specialties, including ancient through contemporary works of art from China, Southeast Asia, Himalayas, India, Japan and Korea, a visual feast will await collectors, curators and novices alike.
Mid-week, Japan Society will host the second official Asia Week New York 2011 event. On Tuesday, March 22, a lecture and private reception will be held in celebration of Bye Bye, Kitty!!!, an ambitious, unprecedented group show featuring recent work by young Japanese artists, most of whom are based in Japan and have not exhibited in New York.
