The Shanghai Restoration Project returns to 92YTribeca with its unique blend of Chinese instrumentation, hip hop and electronica. Producer Dave Liang and MC Jamahl Richardson take listeners on a sonic journey through the city, evoking its infectious energy with a beat driven interactive multimedia performance that draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands. The set showcases a diverse repertoire that h…as found its way into the top of the electronic charts (iTunes, Amazon.com), worldwide advertisements (LVMH), runway shows (Christian Dior) and hit TV programs (The L Word, NBC and BBC Olympic coverage). Each track is accompanied by original projected artwork or footage of Shanghai from visual artists whose work has been showcased at The Sundance Film Festival and in the pages of National Geographic. The show will also feature the renowned Shanghainese singer Zhang Le, described by Oscar and Grammy winning composer Tan Dun as having “a remarkable gift.”
Born in Japan and raised in Seattle, bilingual singer/songwriter Emi Meyer has performed at the renowned FUJI Rock Festival in Japan and the Sundance Film Festival and was named the best New Jazz Artist on iTunes Japan for 2009.
DJ HAHA will spin between sets.
The artists will donate proceeds for this show to benefit Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief.
