A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS STARS TWO OF HOLLYWOOD’S LEADING ASIAN AMERICAN ACTORS
Back to Category Print this page

New York, NY – October 21, 2011— John Cho (“Star Trek,” “Total Recall”) and Kal Penn (“The Namesake”), two of Hollywood’s leading Asian American actors, reprise their title roles in the highly-anticipated A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS.

The holiday-themed comedy marks the third entry in the popular “Harold & Kumar” film series (following “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” respectively) and is the first to be shot in 3D. The Kingsgate Films Production is a New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Mandate Pictures and opens November 4, 2011 in 3D and 2D in select theatres. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. For more information about the film, visit www.haroldandkumar.com.

About “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”

“A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” picks up six years after the duo’s last adventure. After years of growing apart, Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) have replaced each other with new best friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrives at Kumar’s door on Christmas Eve, his attempt to redirect it to Harold’s house ends with the “high grade” contents –and Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree— going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven – and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

“What makes it a Harold & Kumar Christmas,” says Kal Penn, who returns in the role of the slacker Kumar, “is an incredible amount of heart and incredible amount of inappropriateness. You’re used to seeing heart in a holiday movie…inappropriateness, not so much.”

John Cho, who reprises his role as Harold, the more uptight half of this odd couple, notes, “Making a Harold & Kumar movie is always fun and it’s always outrageous. Even though the films draw a line further out than most, they also have a surprisingly earnest and innocent attitude towards everything, which makes them weirdly lovable. And we are following Christmas movie rules. At first glance anyway.”

About the “Harold & Kumar” film series

The “Harold & Kumar” film series began in 2004 with the release of “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” which was followed by the 2008 sequel “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.”  Acclaimed for featuring non-traditional Asian American lead characters, the films have garnered a huge cult following.

About John Cho

John Cho (Harold Lee) reprises his role from the cult comedies “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.” Upcoming, he stars opposite Colin Farrell and Kate Beckinsale in the sci-fi thriller “Total Recall” and returns for “American Reunion,” the fourth installment of the original “American Pie” series. His previous film credits include J.J. Abrams’s “Star Trek”; the Weitz Bros’ “American Dreamz,“ starring alongside Willem Dafoe and Hugh Grant; “Better Luck Tomorrow”; the American Pie series; “Pavilion of Women”; Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris”; and the Best Picture Oscar® winner “American Beauty.”

Cho was a series regular on ABC’s drama series “Flash Forward” and the Weitz Bros’ “Off Centre,” and had a recurring role on the last season of “Kitchen Confidential,” as well as numerous guest roles on television.  Born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Los Angeles, California, Cho began acting while studying English literature at the University of California, Berkeley. His first theatre role in “The Woman Warrior,” an adaptation of the renowned memoir by Maxine Kingston, took him touring across country.  Other stage roles include Laertes in the Singapore Repertory Theater’s production of “Hamlet” and a variety of shows for East West Players.

About Kal Penn

Kal Penn (Kumar Patel) returns to the role he made popular in “Harold & Kumar Go to White

Castle” and its follow-up “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.” He will next be seen opposite Martin Sheen in the drama “Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain.” His other feature credits include “Epic Movie,” “Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj,” “The Namesake,” “A Lot Like Love” and “Superman Returns.”  Known for his role as young Dr. Lawrence Kutner on the critically acclaimed television series “House,” Penn also had a recurring role on season six of “24” and guest starred on the hit series “Law & Order: SVU.”

Born and raised in New Jersey, Penn graduated from the Freehold Regional High School District’s Performing Arts High School, attended the Governor’s School for the Arts, and received a degree from the prestigious School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA.  Penn was asked to work on Arts and Youth issues in President Barack Obama’s administration, has served as an Adjunct Professor of Cinema, Sociology and Asian American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in International Security at Stanford University.
