CAAPS cordially invites you to an evening with Dr. Shu Chien (錢煦), who was recently awarded the National Medal of Science by President Obama, adding to the many accolades he has received through his prominent scientific career. Dr. Chien is one of the 6 scientists who have been elected fellows/ members in all 4 major US scientific institutions: American Academy of Arts & Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine. He is also a member of the Academia Sinica (中央研究院) in Taiwan.
Dr. Chien will be visiting NYC to receive an honorary doctor’s degree from Columbia University. Notwithstanding his brief stay and busy schedule, we are fortunate that Dr. Chien has accepted our invitation to meet and share with friends in NYC the path leading to his successful career. Dr. Shu Chien (錢煦),
As a doctor, researcher and professor, Chien, University Professor and Y.C. Fung Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine as well as director of the Institute of Engineering in Medicine at University of California, San Diego, has made seminal contributions to fields of biology, medicine and engineering. His primary areas of research are cardiovascular physiology, molecular and cellular bioengineering, and stem cell regulation. He is the author of more than 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles and editor of 11 books. He has been a leader of numerous professional societies and the recipient of countless awards, including the National Medal of Science, which he received from President Obama in 2011.
