This place has been one of the more well-known Chinatown mainstays that has managed to keep its name and thrive in all the years I have walked by this place. This place was probably here back before I was born, which is an example to how good this place is. Their char siu was the best. It was the perfect blend of taste and fat bits, mostly due to the sauce and the tenderness of the meat and the fat bits that got left in. I still remember it to this day because I don’t think any other restaurant comes close to matching how this place pulled off char siu. I remember my parents ordering it to go for dinner, good childhood memories. Now I feel very old.
Besides that, when it comes to this store, I remember it being unbearably hot during the summer at one point since they have the grill and fire next to the entrance. Being that it’s been a long time since I have been there, I really hope that they managed to install a fan or an air conditioner for the customers. If you’re expecting a beautiful setting, you’re not gonna find it here. It looks dirty and dank like any other Chinatown restaurant, but I find that as a major part of its appeal. Reviewers have said that there is a long line that forms in order to get a seat there and there is a big possibility that you might have to sit next to strangers if there are not enough seats. I wouldn’t be surprised about that as this has been a mainstay of Chinatown for over three decades. If you want reasonably priced and tasty char siu as part of your meal, I can’t recommend a better place than Big Wong King.
