You’ll take to these water sports like a duck to, er, water. Try free kayaking at the Downtown Boathouse’s fourth location, on Governors Island; a beginner’s sailing course; outrigging; stand-up paddleboarding; or Jet Skiing.
Stand-up paddleboarding

Take a whack at this Hawaiian activity with the Ma
nhattan Kayak Company. Start with SUP Basics ($95): During the 90-minute, land-and-river-based course, you’ll learn different positions, finishing with the signature standing Tahitian racing stroke. Afterward, test your talents with practice sessions (five for $75) while a trained instructor supervises.
Jet Skiing

Make it your summer mission to carve up the waters of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn with Jetty Jumpers. Options abound, but the most popular is the three-hour NYC tour ($325), which zips you past Lady Liberty. The fee covers equipment, riding gear, wet suits and a safety class, and a buddy can ride shotgun for an extra $75.

Turn the Hudson shore into Polynesia in this 45-foot-long oceangoing vessel. The New York Outrigger club’s free novice program offers a half hour of training on land, followed by 30 to 45 minutes on the water, with three beginners paired with three experienced paddlers. Fill out a free preregistration form on the website, and you’ll receive an e-mailed sign-up link for the class.

Instructors at the Manhattan Sailing School turn amateurs into aficionados with their immersive basic sailing course. The 20 hours of tutelage (Sat, Sun 9am–7pm) are split between theory and practice. You and three others will perfect all the necessary skills in a J/24 keelboat, including basic navigation, rigging and derigging, plus proper commands, so you wont be stuck yelling “land ho!” over and over. Basic sailing course, $390.
