From a culture steeped in rich traditions of puppetry comes Papermoon Puppet Theatre, a new mixed-media production exploring themes of identity, society and Indonesia’s recent past.
Mwathirika is set in 1965, the infamous Year of Living Dangerously, when thousands of Indonesians were jailed and murdered. The play tells the history of the lost, and the lost history of a nation, in a non-verbal, puppet-theater experience.
This program is part of Asia Society’s ongoing initiative Creative Voices of Muslim Asia, made possible by support from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. For more information, please visit asiasociety.org/creativevoices.
