Celebrate Japan’s New Year’s holiday with lion dancing (shishi-mai) accompanied by live taiko drumming, followed by a mini taiko workshop! (Taiko demonstrations will begin at 2 pm and 3 pm.) There will be many traditional New Year’s activities for children, including rice pounding (mochi-tsuki), special New Year’s calligraphy (kakizome), kite-making/flying (takoage) and funny face game (fukuwarai). The festival is open 2-4 pm.
Oshogatsu is a part of CelebrASIA NYC: New Year’s Festivities for Families, a series of programs offered by Japan Society, The Korea Society, Asia Society and Museum, China Institute in America and the Rubin Museum of Art introducing children to New Year’s traditions through hands-on workshops, performances and auspicious food.
