CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students, both high school and GED graduates, who need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, six of the University’s seven community colleges and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education. CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development and a supportive teacher approach. The program has proven to be highly effective at reducing and/or eliminating students’ remedial needs within one semester. In FY12, CUNY Start served approximately 1,225 students at seven campuses. In FY13, CUNY Start is expanding to an additional 8 full-time programs serving and 1,850 students or 625 more students than in FY12, and by spring of 2014, it is estimated that CUNY Start will serve nearly 4,000 students, more than doubling in size.
The Associate Program Director of CUNY Start will provide integrative and centralized management for the operational services that support the program’s academic and college readiness objectives, particularly teacher and advisor recruiting, student and community outreach and University-wide communication and collaboration. As a member of the CUNY Start Program’s leadership team, the Associate Program Director will develop and implement policies and procedures to support expansion goals and enrollment targets, plus ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. Additionally, the Associate Director will serve as a principle resource liaison for all staff members and instructors at the Central Office and participating college campuses. The position reports to the University Director of CUNY Start.
Other duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
– Manage the implementation of citywide program outreach efforts targeting community-based, education and other public and private entities that serve prospective students.
– Manage program-wide teacher and advisor personnel activities, including recruitment and hiring.
– Oversee college campus based student recruitment efforts, monitoring and reporting.
– Develop the program’s student and policy materials.
– Create outcome report templates and participate in evaluating participating colleges’ submissions to help determine program priorities.
– Develop and implement the annual calendars for semester and trimester programs, including the scheduling of instructional time and testing plans.
– Collaborate with various subject matter experts and administrators to ensure that the program’s goals and staffing levels are well-aligned with its instructional model.
– Identify and coordinate marketing and outreach strategies to increase program visibility such as social media networks, newsletters and the creation of CUNY Start alumni groups.
– Oversee all online/web page content to ensure accuracy and user-friendliness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree and six years’ relevant experience required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
– Advanced degree in a related field strongly preferred
– Six (6) years of progressively responsible program administration and planning experience, preferably an educational, social service program serving under-prepared students
– Strong analytical, evaluation, and research skills
– Ability to use sound judgment to draw conclusions and make recommendations
– Detail oriented and accurate with strong writing, proofreading and editing skills
– Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills with strong consultation, negotiation and presentation skills and group facilitation skills
– Strong organizational skills with ability to establish work and project plans, manage multiple assignments with conflicting priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic customer-responsive office
– Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and collaboratively as a team member
– Proficiency using standard office computer programs, systems and databases
COMPENSATION
$64,956 – $82,299; commensurate with qualifications and experience.
