In art, the word multidisciplinary means many disciplines, many mediums.
From May 18 to July 13, Sumei hosts a series of 9 multidisciplinary workshops entitled “Food For Thought”. From their experiences in the workshops, artists will make new works. These works will be included in Sumei’s yearly major curated exhibition The Newark Arts Council, Open Doors Studio Tour 2013 which opens October 11, 2013 at the Prospect St. Firestation Gallery in Newark.
Workshops will include several slide talks and discussions
1 – Workshop begins with Students introducing their previous works and answering questions of their peers and the instructor.
2 – Talk on the expectations and nature of the work to be produced for exhibition.
3 -Talk about contemporary art world and view various contemporary artists’ works.
4 – Students will learn about different mediums, their applications and about contemporary art processes that are defining art making today.
5 – Talk on the use of different mediums in relation to providing emotional experiences in art.
6 – Students will do story boarding to explain the way they wish to proceed with their work.
7 – Students start their work with the help of the instructor.
8 – Students are given assignments related to their projects
All mediums accepted (including performance), each artist must participate in all 9 workshops. Each session will be approximately 4 hours. Artist fee $15per session. Dates of workshops will be Saturday evenings during May, June, July:
May 18, 25; June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; July 6, 13, from 5pm to 9pm.
Exhibition will be featured in Ironbound Unbound #4 Magazine (catalog) as well as given international and national web exposure. Selected works from the workshops will be included in an International exhibition in 2014.
Applicant artists will be interviewed by Ironbound Unbound #4 Curator and a Board Member of Sumei Art Center. Deadline for requesting interviews for participation is April 30, 2013.
