Ramen, a Japanese noodle soup, has become extremely popular and trendy in New York in the past several years with an array of ramen shops serving a wide range of flavors. In this event, we welcome Professor George Solt of New York University to discuss the history and culture of Japanese ramen. He will explore why and how ramen became so popular and developed into one of Japan’s national foods with various regional variations.
George Solt is an assistant professor in the History Department at New York University. He received his Ph.D. in the History of Modern Japan from the University of California San Diego in 2009. His work focuses on the cultural history of modern Japan, with an emphasis on changes in food and leisure practices. He is currently completing a manuscript on the history of ramen, examining the ways in which shifts in dietary habits in Japan have been linked to transformations in labor and national identity.
Fee: $10/person. (Check or cash only).
All attendees will receive a package of instant ramen.
Registration: Space is limited and RSVP is required.
