My childhood friend, Nina Louie, a 32-yr-old mother, has been battling stage IV lymphoma and it recently recurred in her brain. She has endured 12 cycles of chemotherapy since last September and she now has just 7 weeks to find a bone marrow donor for a much needed stem-cell transfusion.
The problem is that Nina is mixed Chinese and Thai and the Asian population is so underrepresented in the national donor registries, that Nina and thousands of other Asian Americans have extremely low odds of ever finding a match.
But Nina is turning her misfortune into a call for action. She’s launched a website: www.SaveNina.com and a facebook page (SaveNina) and she’s hosting dozens of Blood Marrow Typing drives all over the country to expand the donor registries for Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage and to help make miracles for thousands of patients like her and their families.
And SaveNina is coming to NYC! If you are age 18-44, in overall good health, and would like to get registered, please take the time to come out and join us at any of these drives and help make a difference. All we need is 15 minutes of your time, a cheek swab and some contact info and you’re done! And should you be a match for someone in need, donating stem cells has improved vastly and it’s as easy as donating blood (hip bone extractions are no longer necessary in most cases).
