The Museum of Chinese in America at 215 Centre St, New York, NY 10013.
August 3, 2013. 12pm noon
The Museum of Chinese in America is hosting its annual Dragon Boat Festival, on August 3. Visitors of all ages are invited to create accordion dragons, make xiang bao (potpourri sachets), design lucky charms, participate in family friendly tours, and enjoy special storytelling sessions.
The dragon boat race honors the awakening of the River Dragon and also marks the summer season of rice planting. At this festival, visitors will discover the rituals behind the modern Sport of Dragon Boat Racing in an educator-led activity. Join teaching artist Evan Goodman in a drum making workshop.
In an interactive Dragon Boat Storytelling session, participants will travel back in time over 2,000 years following the journey of Qu Yuan, an honorable poet and statesman, and learn how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be. Throughout the afternoon, visitors are invited to drop-in art activities and artist demonstrations by paper artist Shu-Shia Sanborn.
A complete festival schedule is available on the Museum’s website.
