Comfort Women Wanted was originally exhibited in The Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in Korea, and will be presented in Times Square from September 9 to October 9, 2013 from September 9 to October 9, 2013, in collaboration with the Times Square Alliance and the NYC Department of Transportation’s Urban Art Program. This is a public art project that Chang-Jin Lee brings to light the memory of 200,000 young women, known as “comfort women,” who were systematically exploited as sex slaves in Asia during WWII, and increases awareness of sexual violence against women during wartime . Lee’s project is based on interviews with Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Filipino, and Dutch “comfort women” survivors and a former Japanese soldier.
