On Monday Nov 18th night, the owner of 5Pointz in Long Island City Queens used a crew of painters to work overnight and paint over graffiti wiping clean a canvas that was used by thousands of artists, a mecca outdoor art display for street artists from around the world.
By Tuesday morning, the work of some 1,500 artists had been wiped out, and the plan of this building is to convert the three-acre site into a $400 million development. Marie Cecile Flageul, a 5Pointz spokesperson, said the paint crew, along with police protection, came around 1 a.m. and finished around 7 a.m. and we just spoke to 5Pointz curator Jonathan Cohen “Meres One”, he will have the opportunity to curate 10,000-square-feet of “art panels and walls” in the new buildings.
RIP 5Pointz, we really want to thank those who turned his building into a work of art. We’re getting rid an iconic work of art just to ‘gentrify’ the neighborhood! How disappointing!
5Pointz, you are a forever legend!
