Sounds of Korea, Korean Performing Arts Center’s performance group, will proudly present the “Sounds of Korea” event at KPAC on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. This showcase is a meaningful event to KPAC as it is the first performance for KPAC for the year 2014. This showcase is part of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters NYC (APAP) 2014 Showcase, the annual global performing arts conference and marketplace in New York (Jan 10-14, 2014). The Center for Traditional Music and Dance (CTMD) is supporting our performance group at the APAP conference.
This APAP conference will gather more than 35,000 professionals from around the world, including artists, agents, managers, presenters, programmers, producers, promoters, and professionals to build and strengthen networks. More than 1,000 showcases from several nations will be represented in the performances that consist of different genres and styles. This showcase will help us to broaden the audience of those who understand the value of our art and helps to present our heritage and tradition to the world. The Sounds of Korea performance group will be a representative for Korean traditional performance and give the audience the most comprehensive opportunity to experience group’s work by discovering our talents and creativity. Our group will show the best of its talents and what is to come in this season.
Sounds of Korea is the premier performance group of Korean traditional arts in the U.S., directed by master dancer Sue Yeon Park, a NEA National Heritage Fellow. Sounds of Korea will show exquisitely costumed dancers and rousing processional live musicians performing a wide range of repertories of traditional Korean dance such as Salpuri-chum (shaman ceremonial dance), Bucha-chum (fan dance), Ip-chum (improvisational folk dance), Heung-chum (dance of joy and ecstasy), and the dynamic, vibrant, and colorful drum beatings of Samgomu (three drums dance) ensemble. The most interesting part of this showcase will be Sounds of Korea’s Samulnori (traditional percussion music) performance. This performance will premiere new female performers and will present KPAC’s main Samulnori team for the New Year. In addition, KPAC will invite a special guest from Korea who is gamin, upcoming Korean traditional musician and considered an expert in the piri wind instrument.
