From the primary structure of the Boeing 787 to light-weight compressed natural gas (CNG) containers, carbon fiber is in greater demand than ever as a solution to the issues of sustainable energy policy and global warming. Toray, which entered the carbon fiber business in 1971 and has since become the world’s number one supplier of the material, has spent over 40 years developing high-performance carbon fiber for a variety of applications in the aerospace, industrial and sporting goods industries. With its acquisition of Zoltek, announced in September of 2013, it will also solidify its position in wind power related and automobile structural parts. In this lecture, Moriyuki Onishi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Torayca & Advanced Composites Division of Toray Industries, Inc., discusses Toray’s strategy for further expanding its business in composite materials and carbon fiber, with a particular focus on its regional strategy in the U.S.
