To help overseas tourists visiting Taiwan stay connected with their family and friends back home and access a wealth of Taiwan tourism and other information online, the Tourism Bureau, MOTC is providing the iTaiwan service. It gives free WiFi service to tourists at around 5,100 locations throughout the island.

Starting May 2013, the Bureau began taking applications from people interested in using the service. As of the end of December, it has received more than 110,000 applications from over 149 countries.

To make it easier for tourists to apply for the service and allow them to enjoy free online access as soon as they arrive in Taiwan, the Bureau has launched an online iTaiwan application system. Starting Dec. 20, 2013, people who plan to visit Taiwan can go on the website http://itaiwan.taiwan.net.tw to apply for the service before they arrive in Taiwan. After arriving in Taiwan, they can go to the Tourism Bureau’s counter at the airport or other visitor centers or tourists information desks throughout Taiwan to open an iTaiwan account. After getting an account, they can use the service for up to 30 days and, if needed, they can extend the service period to 60 to 90 days.

After obtaining an iTaiwan account, visitors can enjoy WiFi service using their smart phone or other mobile devices at iTaiwan WiFi access points, which is wherever they see the iTaiwan logo. Using their mobile device, they can choose the “iTaiwan” online access name, enter their account number and password, and enjoy unlimited online access. With this service, they can easily search for tourism or transportation information as well as places to enjoy Taiwanese cuisine or take pictures of the scenery and attractions, among many possibilities. 交通部觀光局為解決國外來台旅客入境後之通訊問題，協調行政院研究發展考核委員會開放iTaiwan（愛台灣）約5,100個WiFi熱點，提供國外來台旅客一個容易取得且方便使用的WiFi通訊環境,自102年12月20日起，來台旅客可於出發前，上網至http://itaiwan.taiwan.net.tw 網站登記申請，入境後，到觀光局服務櫃檯或全國各地旅服中心服務台憑護照即可開通iTaiwan賬號，有效使用時間為30天，必要時可延長為60天或90天。
