Citi Series on Asian Arts and Culture
The evocative songs of the Dong people include everything from festive drinking music and ritual courtships to solemn historical narratives. The Dimen Dong Folk Chorus from Guizhou Province offers a centuries-old tradition of unaccompanied polyphonic singing, weaving scenes of agrarian life from sound. Music of the Dong people, one of China’s 55 ethnic minorities, has been cited on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2009.
Pre-performance discussion at 7:00 pm, with Ren Hexin, Director, Dimen Dong Culture Eco-Museum; Joanna Lee, musicologist and co-Founder, Western China Cultural Ecology Research Workshop; and Ken Smith, arts critic, Financial Times.
Presented in association with the 2014 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This program is supported in part by the Armand G. Erph Fund.
Free admission. Tickets will be available on June 2.
