Ranee Ramaswamy, Aparna Ramaswamy, and Rudresh Mahanthappa, co-creators of Ragamala Dance’s Song of the Jasmine, engage in conversation with Rachel Cooper, Director of Global Performing Arts, Asia Society, in advance of their New York premiere at Damrosch Park Bandshell.
Song of the Jasmine is a new collaboration between contemporary explorers of South India’s classical Bharatanatyam dance, Aparna Ramaswamy and Ranee Ramaswamy, Artistic Co-Directors of Ragamala Dance, and acclaimed jazz saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. The piece moves between past and present, composition and improvisation, music and dance, in an exploration of the symbolic jasmine flower as it traverses the world of man and the world of the gods.
