There is this gratuitous feeling in being able to place things where I deem fit and to control the existence of an object, compelling me to create works where images are categorized and ‘framed’ to fit together, whether it be fluidly or by force. Like an abstracted title to a feeling or event, I turn to symbols and signs as a way of opening up a language that helps to reconfigure and re-label the world that I know.
I’ve always liked to believe that there is something bigger than us – that with something as simple as a name, our destiny can be created. With this notion, we can be curious enough about the future to question what we don’t know is absolute, but we can also have a personal satisfaction in putting fate in the cards and out of our responsibility – to either accept the path destined for us, or shy away from it. I turn to the vague realm of the mystical and the magical as a symbol of my own faith in chance, as well as an interpretation of my personal beliefs.
Akin to the idea of artist as mythmaker I take a surreal/dream-like approach to my work, allowing me to use a language of decoders and hieroglyphics to better organize my thoughts in the visual realm. By collecting aspects of the human, I attempt to search the common denominator amongst humankind.
