The Korean Performing Arts Center (KPAC) is proud to announce its 20th Annual Performance, New York P’an: Spiritual Exuberance. The event will feature some of the most celebrated traditional performing artists direct from Korea, including Master Shin Young-Hee, an extraordinary pansori singer, who has been designated the official holder (National Human Treasure) of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset, No. 5, Pansori, and Master Lee Kwang-Soo, a legendary percussionist and vocalist of shaman ritual and songs. The two masters will be joined by Sounds of Korea, New York’s foremost Korean performing ensemble presenting a range of folk songs, percussion ensemble music and folk dance, under the direction of Master Sue Yeon Park, designated in 2008 a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts, the nation’s highest honor in the Traditional Arts. This year’s event recreates the tradition of P’an, an indoor or outdoor open stage performance where spectacular traditional arts have traditionally been available and accessible to all social and economic classes, breaking the boundaries between performers and audiences, a critical element of importance for the artistic aesthetic and spiritual bonds of shamanistic rituals.
