“Soegija” tells the story of the first Indonesian Archbishop, Mgr. Albertus Soegijopranoto, SJ, who was very instrumental in bridging diverse communities, crises, and constituents in Semarang, Indonesia, during the interesting transition between Dutch – Japanese – Indonesian independence Era.
This is a multicultural movie with universal humanistic values and themes. Culturally it embraces many social values and problems that are still valid until today: racism and discrimination, power struggle, inner conflict within one’s nationality – individual choices – and the inner ” truth”. The audience will be presented with questions, examples, and experiences through the lives of various characters in the movie: indigenous “pribumi” Indonesians, Chinese Indonesians, Dutch missionaries – soldiers – news reporters, and Japanese soldiers and politicians.
With the hope of opening people’s minds and spirits towards multiculturalism, we hope to pose questions and give people the opportunity to reach further “beyond inclusion”, to be able to empathically connect and collaborate with each other through the lens of multicultural understanding, within the context of a 21st century society.
