AAIFF’14 Audience Award Choice Winner KUMU HINA will have a special screening co-host by the Ford Foundation and Philanthropy New York, with a musical performance by Kealii Reichel and Shawn Pimental. The film tells the powerful story of Hina Wong-Kalu, a native Hawaiian transgender teacher, cultural practitioner and community leader.
Using traditional culture, she inspires a female student to overcome convention and take the lead in the school’s all-male hula troupe. But Hina faces challenges of her own. An incredible docu-drama about a remarkable woman’s fight for fairness-revealing Pacific Islanders’ struggle to maintain their culture and values in modern-day Hawaii.
The screening is free of charge and will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson and Hina Wong-Kalu herself.
