This winter Jing Arts Project is proud to announce Gradually Fog Up, the first solo show of photography by Gu Zhongsheng in New York City. This will be a two-part event beginning at Ouchi Gallery with an opening held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 from 7pm to 10pm. Gu Zhongsheng’s work will be on view at this location for an exclusive week-long VIP preview period. Gradually Fog Up will move to the Schoolhouse Art Gallery and will be on view from February 12, to March 28, 2015.
Gu Zhongsheng was born in 1983 in Jilin Province, China. After graduating from Environment Arts Design Department of China University of Geosciences, he moved to Beijing to study Photography at Beijing Film Academy in 2005. Gu Zhongsheng began his artistic career as a filmmaker and won numerous awards before transitioning to photography. His photographic work is clearly influenced by the passing of time and the freezing abilities that are simply not possible with motion picture. Having exhibited throughout Beijing, Gu Zhongsheng brought his practice to the United States with a residency at the Brush Creek Foundation in Wyoming in 2014. Currently, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Gu Zhongsheng captures fleeting moments in his work, in between times that others miss. Whether it is the moment between sunrise and sunset or the rapidly pulsing heartbeat of a cityscape, Gu Zhongsheng reveals thems as a painter with a paintbrush. In his own words, “I want to capture these gasps of light and color, these precious in-betweens that exist only in that instant each day when the equilibrium of the world flips on its axis. Day and night can never co-exist but right here is where they meet.” In his photographic practice process, Gu Zhongsheng is inspired by the conversation between transient and eternity. The work seeks to express his singular vision and perception of the world around him.
According to Beijing-based curator Ye Dongxu, “Each and everything on earth experiences birth and then death. It doesn’t matter if it’s as small as a piece of dust or as big as the entire universe. It is constantly changes as it moves. The truth of life is in this endless circle without a beginning or an ending. Through Gu Zhongsheng’s true, pure and thorough lens, you can see him pondering the ultimate question of life, exploring the relationship between time and space and presenting the microscopic emotion of humans.”
Gradually Fog Up is supported by the Arts in Bushwick and Bushwick Community Darkroom.
