Thursday, July 30 7PM to 10:30PM
Queens Museum
New York City Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, NY 11368
The Queens Museum’s summertime staple, Passport Thursdays: International Dance, Music, and Film Series, returns for another exciting season featuring some of the many international locales that fuel Queens’ cultural and artistic vitality. This year’s adventure includes stops in the Caribbean, Taiwan, India, Colombia, Korea, and South Africa. So leave your baggage at home and bring a picnic blanket out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for an evening in the shadow of the majestic Unisphere. There will be free artmaking workshops for families before the films start, our galleries and café will remain open until 8pm, and we won’t let a little rain spoil the fun, we’ll just move the whole event indoors.
This Thursday there will be dance performance by the Parul Shah Dance Company. Parul Shah is an internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer and choreographer whose work is expanding the classical medium beyond cultural boundaries. With a dedication to excellence, Shah preserves the form’s aesthetic integrity while developing a unique and powerful vocabulary.
There will also be a film screening of Haider. Starring Shahid Kapoor as the titular protagonist, and co-starring Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, and Irrfan Khan, the film is a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995. Haider, a poet, returns to Kashmir at the peak of violence to seek answers about his father’s disappearance and ends up being tugged into the politics of the state.
