“Life is disappointing, isn’t it?” Elderly parents visit their grown children in the frenetic capital, only to face a chilly reception. From a deceptively simple plot, Ozu (and frequent stars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, radiant) crafts a quietly devastating tale, both incisive portrait of postwar Japan and timeless meditation on family. Unknown in the West until the ’70s, TOKYO STORY was Ozu’s favorite of his own films and also the masterwork responsible for his discovery abroad, named on lists of the best films of all time ever since.
