Ma-Yi Theater, in collaboration with the Asia Society, is excited to bring you ALAMAT: Stories of Philippine Gold, a one night only performance as part of the Philippine Gold Exhibit.
Using a highly theatrical language and striking visual style, Ma-Yi Theater Company has created a compelling evening of theater that retraces the evolution of Philippine Gold as uniquely Filipino. Weaving together indigenous myths about creation, nature, and tribal history unique to each region of the country, Ralph B. Peña has created a rich tapestry of stories based on the myths of the Ilocano, the Tagalogs, and the Visayan people. Directed by Jack Tamburri, this unique evening of theatre brings to life the exhibit’s stunning subject and immerses its audience in pre-colonial legends from across the archipelago.
ALAMAT brings to life a community of wildly different characters from all over the Philippine islands to explore the ways that gold has been valued: a husband and wife whose life is transformed by a miracle baby hatched from a watermelon, two strangers from different worlds bound together by inexplicable desire and an enchanted gold necklace, and a pair of newlyweds whose trust is put to the test by a tuft of golden hair.
