Hideyo Noguchi is widely known as a legendary bacteriologist who made significant strides in the field of medicine. This movie delves deep into his personal life, exploring the powerful relationship he had with his mother in order to introduce you to Hideyo the real human being. It is the story of a poor farm boy who suffered huge setbacks, including severe burns in infancy, but refused to give up hope in the future.
Perfectly demonstrated by his decision to eventually move to the United States, and tirelessly work to become a renowned bacteriologist who first discovered the causative agent of syphilis. It was a life journey filled with triumph, joy and heartache. This drama is poignantly captured in the film when one day, Hideyo receives a letter from his illiterate mother urging him to “Please return home immediately, please return home…” The surprising and climactic scenes that follow have won the film much praise for their power and beauty. You will surely enjoy this story of an amazing bond between a mother and son forged through love.
