On January 16, 2016, the people of Taiwan will go to the polls and elect a new president. Twenty-nine years after the end of martial law, it will be the island’s sixth presidential election by popular vote and a strong demonstration of its people’s commitment to democracy. Polls show Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Tsai Ing-wen in the lead. If Dr. Tsai wins, she will be Taiwan’s first woman leader.
