What excites Chinese people overseas most is the Lunar New Year Celebration which is right after Christmas. People love to sit together around a round table where they eat dinner and watch TV programs amidst the sound of firecrackers. There is no exception for the 2016 celebration. As usual, NYCOS will keep providing the exciting programs that will enrich the Chinese communities’ cultural lives by giving a free Peking Opera performance.
At 1:30pm to 3:30pm, Sunday, January 17th, the performance will kick off with a series of arias of Peking Opera followed by the famous excerpt Catch and Release Cao · In the Inn, adapted from world-renowned literature The Romance of Three Kingdoms. This traditional Peking Opera excerpt of Yu Style will be presented by Zexin Li, Leping Xu and Yuan Gao, who will play a story between Cao Cao, Lv Boshe and Chen Gong. After that, Qingyin Yue will showcase an excerpt of Xuce Running In the City. This show is a representative work of Xinfang Zhou, who is a world-renowned Peking Opera Performing Artist of China. When he was performing the role, he used different techniques such as rubbing and flinging away the beard to demonstrate the emotional feelings of Xuce. These techniques present the tiredness and rush of running of Xuce vividly. Born in a family of opera artists, Qingyin was highly professional at the role of old gentlemen with skilled expertise in both singing and body movement. He is also the Deputy Director of Zhou Xinfang Art Research Association. The final and the most important show is The Emperor and the Bar Maid by Bin Ma and Xiaowen Xu. This would be the second time that they will co-star. Let’s look forward to the story of Emperor Zhengde meeting Feng Jie in his casual clothes! Click here for the video of their first performance together (the show starts at the 53th minute).
