China Rocks And We Understand! Creating A Lyric Translation Marketplace In China

Robert Singerman, VP of International Development at LyricFind, will be giving a presentation at “Serve The People! Serve The Rock! China’s Post-Cultural Revolution ‘Yaogun’,” a one-day event examining the evolution of Chinese Rock (Yaogun) being held at China Institute on January 19th. LyricFind is supplying Chinese lyrics and soon, lyric translations to the biggest international platforms, (Deezer, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon, Shazam, Soundhound and hundreds of others…), and attempting to create a legal lyrics and legal lyric translation marketplace in China.

To export Chinese rock, or other non-instrumental popular Chinese music well, there must be lyric translations, unless the international audience is only Chinese ex-pats, or a small sub-set of “world music” fans, who are more interested in the form of the songs, (rhythm, structure, melody, instrumentation), than the meaning of the songs. LyricFind is supplying Chinese lyrics and soon, lyric translations to the biggest international platforms, (Deezer, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon, Shazam, Soundhound and hundreds of others…), and attempting to create a legal lyrics and legal lyric translation marketplace in China, with the assistance of R2G and others in China, to license lyrics and lyric translations to the biggest Chinese music and music video platforms.

Lyric translations have been required in China for many years now for international music and although generally unauthorized by the publishers and writers, the biggest Chinese platforms and websites have shown the lyric translations of international songs, along with the music and videos of the artists. In my opinion, that’s one major reason for the reported almost 50/50 international/domestic music unauthorized P2P traffic in China over the past decade.

With the new laws in place in China this year, in 2016, we are hopeful that music publishing standards will be more normalized and lyrics and lyric subtitles, direct translations of the songs of international artists, from many languages, will be exhibited and monetized by Chinese, as well as by worldwide platforms, respecting global publishing laws and standards.

This initiative will give the rest of the world the opportunity to understand the greatest Chinese rock bands and rock songs and can pave the way to a much greater acceptance and global market for these bands, songwriters, record labels and music publishing companies. Mainly, it will allow global fans to understand the culture and messages of Chinese Rock, which I believe is the goal of exporting music.

A powerpoint presentation, with some statistics and video links will form the basis of this 15 minute presentation.

Having much experience in international music export and many aspects of the music business, I am happy to also participate in the panel/s in a much more general way, speaking, with the other experts, of sync placement, touring, labels, distributors, publishers, advertising, radio promotion, publicity, social media, mobile opportunities, ex-pat marketing and other means of exporting Chinese Rock into the US, or any other countries.
