“It’s hard to think of an orchestra that can stir greater thrills than the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer,” wrote the New York Classical Review. Romanticism dominates the first part of the concert with Weber’s overture to his supernatural opera Der Freischütz and virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin testing his mettle in Liszt’s technically daunting Piano Concerto No. 1. One of the great 20th-century symphonies, Prokofiev’s brilliantly scored, melodic, and emotionally compelling Symphony No. 5 concludes the program.
Program:
WEBER Overture to Der Freischütz
LISZT Piano Concerto No. 1
PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 5
