Journalist and NYU journalism professor Robert S. Boynton and filmmaker Yonghi Yang come together to discuss their recent books on North Korea. In The Invitation-Only Zone: The True Story of North Korea’s Abduction Project, Boynton focuses on the North Korean regime’s abduction of ordinary Japanese from the streets of Japan and tells the story of their lives in North Korea and their return to Japan. Boynton’s initial research for the book was undertaken during his time as a Japan Society U.S.-Japan Media Fellow, during which he interviewed Yonghi Yang. She is known for her documentaries (Dear Pyongyang and Sona, The Other Myself) about her family and the decision by her father, a fervent supporter of the North Korean regime, to send her three older brothers from Japan to North Korea as part of a repatriation campaign and her recent feature film, Our Homeland. Yang’s upcoming book, her first novel scheduled for publication in April 2016, takes place at Korea University in Tokyo and explores the issue of zainichi and a love affair with a Japanese man. Due to her work, Yang can no longer visit her family in North Korea.
