East Asian Studies (EAS) and Korean International Student Organization (KISO) of NYU in collaboration with the House of Sharing (Seoul: Nanumui Jip) are hosting a public event to recognize the human rights violations experienced through the voices of two former Japanese Sexual Slavery Women (also known as “Comfort Women”) during the Asia-Pacific War. Thousands of young women in Korea were forced into Japanese sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII. The inhumane treatment against these women have been repressed by the Japanese Government for decades. Today, the survivors of “Comfort Women” and human rights activist groups continue to put a spotlight on the war crimes that must be acknowledged and remembered by the world. Two former War survivors, Mrs. Ok Sun Lee and Mrs. Il Chool Kang, will be speaking to us about their personal experiences. The mission of this testimonial talk is to establish some valuable linkage between many unmediated gaps between law and history, factual proof and affect, history of the elite and subaltern, global and local feminism, trauma and the spirit through the collective voices of Japanese Sexual Slavery survivors.
Organized by KISO and the House of Sharing (Seoul & New York)
Moderated by Shin Kweon Ahn (The Chief Manager of the House of Sharing)
Sponsored by the Department of East Asian Studies
Advised by Yongwoo Lee (Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow of EAS)
