Joshua Wong is a student activist from Hong Kong. At the age of 14, Joshua founded the group Scholarism in May 2011 to draw attention to the addition of “national education” classes to the local curriculum, which was widely seen as attempts to “brainwash” the next generation of Hong Kong students. Joshua successfully led the campaign to halt the government’s plans, which at one point mobilized over 120,000 supporters in September 2012 to surround the Central Government Headquarters. After this campaign, Joshua and Scholarism remained active in various social causes in Hong Kong, most notably in the campaign for universal suffrage and the inclusion of “civic nomination” for the Chief Executive election of 2017. This culminated in the Umbrella Movement in September 2015 that lasted for 79 days, which was led in part by Joshua, who pushed for peaceful, non-violent civil resistance. Joshua is currently on trial for his role in instigating the occupation, as he continues to fight for democracy in Hong Kong. Joshua is currently 19 years old. Joshua has been widely recognized for his efforts. In 2014, Joshua has been named as one of Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Global Figures, The Time’s Young Person of the Year, and Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Teens. Joshua was also named by Fortune as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders in 2015.
