Japan’s Prewar and Postwar Economic Development lecture will be featuring Fumio Hayashi, Professor from the National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies. The lecture will be moderated by Hugh Patrick the Director of the Center on Japanese Economy and Business Columbia Business School
Synopsis:
Japan’s economic growth since the late 19th century has three major features: rapid postwar growth, often called the “Japanese miracle”; prewar relative stagnation; and Japan’s lost decades since 1990. Professor Hayashi will describe his work exploring the prewar stagnation and lost decades. Recent attempts by others to account for the Japanese miracle will also be discussed.
