As Japanese corporations implement measures to increase the number of female managers, how will the Abe administration’s policy package to create a “society where women can shine” impact women’s empowerment? In Japan, a new law promoting women’s roles in the workplace will be enforced as of April 2016. Companies with 301 or more employees, as well as the central and local governments, are required to report their percentage of female hires and female managers, and set numerical targets for employing and promoting women. Our panelists will also examine the American government’s efforts to promote women’s empowerment, and assess whether Japan and the U.S. might adopt policies such as a quota system that has met with success in Scandinavian countries.
