The fourth generation master puppeteers from Taiwan, I Wan Jan, invited by Flushing Town Hall, Mid-Manhattan Library, Chinese- American Art Council, Michigan Taiwanese American Organization, will be visiting New York, Ann Arbor from May 20 to May 25 and performing the acclaimed “A Chance Encounter Leads to Marriage” (巧遇姻緣).
A Chance Encounter Leads Marriage is a mesmerizing, traditional hand puppet show based on Peking Opera. This non-verbal piece tells the tale of a young couple’s chance meeting at a festival that has puppets juggling, performing martial arts and much more. This classic performance will showcase the puppets’ fine movements, such as the young male character (Sheng 生) folding a fan, the female character (Dan 旦) holding an umbrella, older male (Mo 末) smoking, the clown (Chou 丑)decking chair, and street entertainers’ bustling martial arts and acrobatic acts. Without any language barriers, A Chance Encounter Leads Marriage will entertain kids as well as adults.
