Born in Beijing, China and now based in New York City, Annie Chen is a vocalist, composer and bandleader exploring original contemporary jazz music in today’s New York jazz scene. Known mostly for her distinctive voice and composition. Her original septet incorporates many different types of music into a modern jazz setting, with influences from Chinese traditional, classical, gospel, middle-eastern, and even alternative rock music. It features extensive improvisation and strong arrangements to support Annie’s beautiful compositions and her powerful voice.
First album of her group “Pisces the Dreamer” was released in April of 2014 and got “Best Contemporary Jazz Vocal Album” of JZ Music Awards in China. Audiences across the world have already been touched by her fresh and interesting compositions. As part of her CD release tour, the group performed at the Shanghai International Jazz Festival (JZ Festival 2014) as well as festivals in Beijing and Hangzhou. Locally in New York City, they can be found playing at many good jazz venues. The highlight of 2014 for her group was being a part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York, and she became the first Chinese jazz musician who joined this festival in Chinese jazz history. On 26th Feb.2016, her original project was sponsored by NEA(The National Endowment for the Arts) and she lead her septet to perform in the historic jazz venue – Flushing Town Hall for her composition concert and got lots of great feedback from audiences and media.
