Shunzo Ohno, one of the most versatile and influential trumpeters in modern jazz, will make an appearance at the world-renowned Joe’s Pub at the Public alongside his music colleagues Paul Bollenback (guitar), David Berkman (piano), Darryl Johns (bass), and Jerome Jennings (drums).
The spirited interplay of his band reveals the depth of skill and joy in spontaneity that is characteristic of Ohno’s ensemble performances. Shunzo Ohno’s experiences with Art Blakey, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock cast an influence resulting with a force of anticipation and fresh vitality.
ReNew, Ohno’s newest release, has been universally lauded by such critics as Jazz Station’s Arnaldo DeSouteir, who calls it “a flawless album . . . one of the best releases of the year.”
Born in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, Ohno’s rise to prominence began in 1974, when he accepted an offer to perform with the legendary jazz drummer Art Blakey. Since then, Ohno has recorded 16 albums as a leader and has been featured on two Grammy winning recordings. Recently, Ohno won the International Songwriting Competition’s grand prize with his composition “Musashi,” making him the first jazz recipient of this prestigious award.
The documentary film Never Defeated: The Shunzo Ohno Story is based on Ohno’s powerful life experiences, including a serious automobile accident and the diagnosis of Stage 4 throat cancer. Through these life-changing events, he creates inspiration to master the challenges and redevelop his unique sound.
